Calla Lily, The Zantedeschia

Zantedeschia

Native to South Africa fallowing North to Malawi. They were named in tribute to the Italian Botanist Giovanni Zantedeschi. This flower has captured many hearts including Diego Rivera. One of his most well known painting is "The Flower Vendor" one look at at it and one can see the beauty of the Zantedeschia Flower.

This flower grows to about 1-2.5m tall with leaves 15-45cm long. The spathe shaped like funnel comes in many colors but originally are snowy white, yellow and pink and all have a yellow central spandex.

A small but not to well known fact is that the Zantedeschia are poisonous due to the substance of calcium oxalate.
